Need to Know Community Advice Centre was opened in July 1997 as an advice, information and drop-in centre serving the residents of the Kings Heath and surrounding areas.  It has its own constitution and management committee who meet on a monthly basis.  It is not yet a registered charity but follows charitable aims and is a voluntary organisation with no affiliation to any other bodies.  Its aims and objectives are as follows:

Provide something for all the sectors of the community in Kings Heath

Provide information through leaflets, booklets, personal contact and the organisation of various themed activities aimed to improve the lives of residents.

Signpost people to relevant information and organisations to meet their needs and offer a facility from which other organisations can deliver outreach activities.

Provide a place for all people from the local area to come and socialise in a relaxed and friendly manner. These people may then wish to access other services provided.

Support and provide opportunities for people to develop themselves in many ways.

Provide community resources such as computers and equipment.

Provide a place for other agencies to provide advice and information sessions and to run training courses.

Provide a meeting space for groups in or serving the community.

Provide information, training and activities in response to people’s needs and wishes.
Work with other organisations in Kings Heath and other agencies to provide a wide range of co-ordinated services for Kings Heath.

We currently have one paid member of staff and 11 volunteers who serve on the management committee or assist during activities.

In the past 10 years, we have widened our activities to encourage more participation from the community by attending themed activities, groups, informal coffee mornings and various training events.

Service Six, a countywide organisation commissioned by the local County Council provides advice, information and counselling on any issue faced by those youths aged 12-25 years, also provides a regular drop-in service from here. A wide range of issues are covered including housing, finance, grief and self-harming; and counsellors work on a one-to-one basis as well as informally with groups of youths.

Our most recent success has been the acknowledgement of our work within the community by Northampton Borough Council who have designated us a valued community resource, rewarding this work with the cost of our rent and rates on the building within their budget for community centres.

All initiatives with which we are involved are community led, being initiated either by or following consultation with the community in Kings Heath. In raising our own profile, we also hope to raise the profile of the area in general.
